Commentary: Villa del Monte Winery joins the growing Summit Road list

NEW WINERY: John Overstreet and Neil Perrelli are two new names to add to the  growing list of Summit Road area winemakers. The two were part of a neighborhood winemaking co-op that started a dozen years ago. For them the hobby became so entrancing that five years ago they started their own company.

The result is Villa del Monte Winery, named after the mountain subdivision where they live. They produce one vineyard/one varietal wines. Grapes are purchased from neighbors and from as far away as Carneros.

The winery is in a large barn at 23076 Summit Road, near Old Santa Cruz Highway. Since the winery has a shared driveway, tasting hours are limited.

The duo’s workaday jobs are considerably different from viticulture. John is an electrical engineer who works in satellite communications, and his wife Suzanne taught ESL at West Valley College. He has two grown daughters–Sarah and Kate–and teenager Christy will go to Los Gatos High School next year.

Neil and Joyce Perrilli, both California natives, have two offspring–Caeli, a recent grad of Santa Clara University, and Brendan, a freshman at San Jose State University. Joyce oversees marketing and event planning.

Villa del Monte prides itself on its community involvement. As witness: They’ll be pouring at a fundraiser for the Los Gatos High softball team on Feb. 4, at the Campbell Winter Winewalk Feb. 8 and at Gallery Saratoga Feb. 10.

I had a great time meeting Neil, John and Joyce.  It was a cold day but these friendly people and their wines made it for a warm visit along one of the California Wine Trails.
